Callsave / Phonesave Cold Calls

I've recently had a few phone calls from an automated dialler claiming to be from a company called Callsave. The voice explains how you can get cheaper calls as long as you have a BT line, and to press 5 if you're interested. As these calls are coming to my work phone (which isn't a normal BT line), and I've had a couple in the last week, I pressed the 5 key to tell them to bugger off.

Interestingly, the polite representative who answered the phone (called Chris, apparently) introduced himself as working for 'Phonesave', and when pressed for details of how they got my number claimed that they buy marketing lists from other companies.

I later discovered that a friend at work on a similar extension (also beginning 7, but a lower number than mine) recieved a call from them earlier in the day. I suspect they're autodialling sequential numbers, and that their claim of buying marketing lists is complete rubbish.

These are clearly in breach of the Information Commissioners guidelines, (See the The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003) which state that automated calls are only allowed when permission is given.

I've asked for the phone number to be removed from their list, and they seemed to know which number they'd attempted to call, so we'll see if this continues.

The calls appear to be coming from 01273 828810, which is a Brighton number.

It appears I'm not the only person being harassed by this company.

More Research

A little further digging at Companies House revealed a little more info:

CALLSAVE LIMITED
UNIT 1 WOODINGDEAN BUSINESS PARK
SEA VIEW WAY
BRIGHTON
BN2 6NX
Company No. 04227608

Status: Active
Date of Incorporation: 04/06/2001

Update - 12 Feb 2007

I've had an email from Bruce Sutherland of the callsave I mentioned above, who says:

Hi Ben, I came across your blog and thought you may like some info.

Firstly, Callsave is a company of ours but, it is not currently trading, it is "active" in the eyes of companies house though. The calls that you experienced are nothing to do with us, if someone is using the term "callsave", it has no connection with us whatsoever; we do not use those techniques to reach new customers.

Secondly, we have a number of telecom businesses that we operate from Woodingdean, although all in telecoms, we found it necessary to divide them in to separate businesses.

If you would like any further information, please let me know.

Best regards Bruce

PS. It would be great if you could update the blog, I would hate for us to be associated with "phone spamming cold calling bastards" :)

So, it appears that the callsave that is a registered company in Brighton is an unfortunate coincidence, and are not the callsave/phonesave people that keep spamming me and others..

Callsave / Phonesave

I don't like phone spamming cold calling bastards. I'll update this if I hear any more about these people.
